The Power of a Second

Written for Journey on Wednesday, 07 April 2010 11:00

It is an amazing concept isn’t it – time. Arguable the building bricks of life… It starts so innocently baby steps… school… it appears to speed up for a period of about 40 years until finally… wife by your side… caravan on the back… line in the water we drift of to sleep dreaming about the 300 yard drive we hit straight down the fair way this morning.

You can just hear the words of “Maximus” echo in the forest; mounted on a horse, stirring the hearts of his troops… “WHAT YOU DO IN THIS LIFE ECHOS IN ETERNITY!

Yet considering it’s importance – despite being the fabric which makes up a human life isn’t it amazing how seldom it takes centre stage…. But still the time ticks on: seconds… minutes… hours.

It is going too fast! We need to slow it down… if only I had done this differently… I wonder what would have become of that choice… I wish I never made that mistake….

 Yet on it ticks…

The future will be different… I just need to make that mortgage repayment… get that job… make that meeting… build in that suburb… buy that car…

BUT  – “Can worries add a single moment to my life?" (Matt 6:25-34)

What is the purpose of it? For God to create me within the confines of time surely there had to be one! The question is what? Is it possible that times contains a great secret?… perhaps the way to really discover and know an eternal God?

What I have found is that when it comes to connecting with God we tend to overcomplicate the issue… we look for a 10 point guide… we live in the regrets of our past… we live worried about the future… we struggle with the things which we must do to gain enough honour with God so that he will reveal some nugget of wisdom or knowledge.

Yet there seems to be a vast gap between what I think I must do to achieve a righteous relationship… and my experience. Because it seems to be in the toughest of times… when I have really stuffed up and am down and out that I actually hear from God the most… Why is it? Could it be that in trying so hard we miss the key truth… that God actually wants to speak with me!

Think about the whole of the gospel story… the foundation of the Christian faith. Christ came too us… while we were still sinners… to love… to restore relationship… so that once more… if we choose to accept… we could be in communion with Him… this time forever…

You see when it comes to connecting with God, what I have come to realise is this… He actually wants to speak with me far more then I want to speak with Him… and that the only effort that is required on my behalf is to respond.

If there is pleasure in discovering a scent, a taste, a colour, the touch of the beloved – all things temporary… HOW MUCH GREATER must Gods intention have been when He gave us the opportunity to everyday discover a new facet of HIS grace… To experience a deeper depth and receive a greater portion of HIS love.

Truly I will not worry about tomorrow as the is too much to value in today! For there is a secret hidden within time that is often overlooked… can you hear it. There it is again… it exists with every moment.

Imagine it we could slow down time… to shut off noise… to be truly still… Can you hear it…. let us slow it down… let us become still…. Is it possible that there exists within time a gift that is offered anew with every second… an opportunity to respond, to accept and live in the abundance of God’s love…

Can you hear the gentle whisper… His voice of love and passion… Listen… there it is again I love YOU… I LOVE YOU...Surely this is the secret hidden in the breath between every second – for this IS how often God speaks His love over you…For the greatest truth is that between every second HE WAITS LONGINGLY for us to respond. This is the love of our Saviour.

So how shall I answer???? Learning from the past – aspiring for tomorrow I make a choice to live this moment in excellence for Christ.

What about you????

Realise that God is not a subject to be studied, He is more then a set of rules to abide by, Far greater then a theology to be debated, Truly He is the Reality to be discovered – and it is in this moment that we have been given the tremendous privilege of doing so…its a gift worth dying for… why else would the Father have sent His Son.
