Aren’t Christians Hypocrites

Written for Articles on Monday, 30 June 2008 07:11

Christians are all hypocrites!

This is a common objection stated by people justifying why they would never contemplate Christianity. In part it is true – some Christians have been known live opposite to the Gospel they preach. History has many occurrences where bad things have been done in the name of Christianity. We must remember though that plenty of bad things have been done in the name of medicine too – but that doesn’t mean we don’t ever go near a doctor again!

I read the other day that local fish markets were substituting cheap imported fish meat for expensive breeds like dhufish and snapper. We might not like this type of carry on but people still eat fish! I didn’t hear anyone of the news report complain “That’s it! All fish mongers are hypocrites – no more fish for me ever!” The truth is, people still eat fish.

Just because counterfeit currency exists in our world doesn’t mean we stop using money.

I remember speaking with an Australian Federal Police officer who specialised in counterfeit cash. I asked him how he kept on top of all the different variations of counterfeiting techniques that went on around the nation. His answer startled me. He said, “I don’t follow all the various counterfeit copies. All I do is spend time getting to know the real thing inside and out. If I know the real thing well – I will always spot a fake!”

So the existence of hypocrisy in Christian circles is no reason for rejecting Christ. It rather suggests that there is a genuine article as well as spurious copies.

Take a good hard look at Jesus in the Gospels. There is not a sniff of hypocrisy about him. In fact, he was the first to denounce it in others. And it is with Jesus that we are concerned. The truth is, Jesus is the ‘real thing’. Don’t let an isolated few prevent you from getting to know him…inside and out!

No matter where you go, hypocritical people will be found if you look hard enough. That’s not Christianity…it’s humanity.

To know what Christianity is really all about, you must look to Christ…the author and finisher of our faith. Read the Gospel of Mark. Find out for yourself what Jesus is really like. If you contact us, we will send you a copy of the Gospel of Mark.
